Can I create a healthy divorce environment?

Here are 5 tips for creating a healthy divorce environment!

  • Consider all long term ramifications

We all know, in the heat of the moment, divorce can sound like the best option. When you're in the throws of anger, or an argument, or something worse...we jump to the inevitable "D word." Before you jump to that conclusion, think about the long term ramifications that will come along with divorcing your spouse. Make sure you're ready to navigate all that comes with that process.

  • Be completely transparent about finances

Finances are one of the trickiest parts of divorce. Who has what ? Who makes what? Who get's this? Who get's that? It can be a giant headache. Our best advice is to be as transparent as you possibly can about your finances. It just makes everything more smooth in the end.

  • Set your feelings aside

When you're divorcing, the last thing you want to do is to be friendly or amicable with your spouse, but this may be the best advice you can get anywhere. Feelings can get in the way of what the main objective is, and it can make things a lot harder than they need to be. Try and be as civil as you can with your spouse so that you can both carry on with life after all of this, with no lasting anger or hurt. Setting feelings aside can lead to quicker and easier results, and that's what we all want, right?

  • Don't put your children in the middle

This is a tricky one! If you've been married a while, and have kids...you know that this road you'll be navigating as a single parent will be tough. Kids are in the middle, it seems, without even trying to make it that way. Whatever you do, keep your kids out of as much as you can! Don't speak ill of your spouse in front of the kids, and try to keep their lives as "normal" as possible during the process.

  • Don't navigate without an attorney

Last but not least, don't navigate this road alone without an attorney. We're all here working towards the bigger picture, which is splitting up your marriage, household, and assets as equally and fairly as possible. We want all parties to be happy with the outcome, so do yourself a favor and meet with an attorney to discuss your options. It's always better to have someone to fight WITH you, especially in hard family matters like divorce.
